Recipe For JFK’s Favorite Waffles

John F. Kennedy and his wife Jackie famously enjoyed a special waffle recipe when they were in the White House. Here is that recipe to try for yourself.

President’s Day gives us the chance to celebrate the lives of past U.S. presidents, which includes getting to know who they were as people. John F. Kennedy was popular among many, and also apparently had a great taste in food. A special waffle recipe that Kennedy and his wife Jackie loved sits in the National Archives today, but it has been widely leaked. It is unclear as to who actually made these waffles for the Kennedy’s, but all we know is that they were a family favorite. Here is the recipe, so you too can enjoy waffles like JFK.

Ingredients
  • 1 full stick of softened butter
  • 2 (separated) egg yolks from egg whites
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 cup of buttermilk
  • 1 cup and 1 tablespoon of cake flour
  • A pinch of salt
  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder
Process
  • Use a waffle iron and preheat and grease. This process of how to do this will vary by waffle iron so pay attention to the specific directions.
  • Combine the butter and sugar and cream them. Once creamed, add egg yolks and mix them into the butter and sugar mixture. Keep the egg whites separate.
  • Add the flour and buttermilk to the mixture.
  • Place the egg whites in a separate bowl from the primary mixture and whip them.
  • Add in the egg whites once whipped into the mixture. Also add baking powder. This mixture should be light and fluffed.
  • Pour the mixture into the waffle iron and bake. Once done, serve with maple syrup and butter.
